The future of auto recycling

The realm of auto recycling, like the broader automotive industry, functions as an interconnected ecosystem of businesses. This ecosystem engages in interactions both within its own domain and with various segments of the overall auto supply chain, exemplifying a robust manifestation of the circular economy. Car Recycling Reveals the Value in Value In Junked Vehicles

December 1, 2023

Car recycling companies purchase vehicles which are no longer operational, including those declared total losses by insurers. They meticulously extract oil, coolant, various fluids, and batteries, ensuring these materials seamlessly integrate into appropriate supply chains. Annually, as per ARA estimates, the industry collects and repurposes or recycles:

  • 100.8 million gallons of gasoline and diesel fuel
  • 24 million gallons of motor oil
  • 8 million gallons of engine coolant
  • 4.5 million gallons of windshield washer fluid
  • 96% of all lead-acid batteries
Recycling efforts also have the potential to unearth elusive parts for older vehicles..
